Course
Information
From
18 km to 25 km, the Nordic Adventure course will utilize the
power line and two private forest roads rather than the Presidential
Range Rail trail. This change provides more snowmobile-free kilometers
and more varied terrain, (flat and gently rolling). The course
returns to the rail trail at 25 km, and continues along it to
the start of the Jefferson Notch Road, at 29 kilometers.
On Jefferson Notch, snowmobiles will be limited to one way, (a NH Bureau of Trails
concession) to reduce their numbers and impact. With snowmobiles descending the
skiers' uphill, the amount of exhaust produced will be reduced from previous
years.
For the 2004 Nordic Adventure, we added kilometers at Great Glen so that the
field was more dispersed by the time folks entered the narrower section in the
woods, heading down to the river crossing. On the 50 kilometer course, rather
than skiing down the Base Road several k's before turning into Bretton Woods,
the course crossed the Base Road, went down the Mt. Clinton Road for a km, and
turned into the Bretton Woods trail system sooner. Both these course changes
will again be utilized for this year's event.
The event organizers reserve the right to make changes in the course if weather
or circumstances require this.
Awards
Party

Each
finisher will be awarded a special event pin, gold for 50 km finishers,
silver for 25 km finishers upon completion of
the course. Relay team members will also receive a silver logo
pin this year. In addition, awards for top finishers in the timed
(25 and 50 km) classes will be presented at the awards party. A drawing
for merchandise prizes will be held and include finishers in the
non-timed classes as well. You must be present to pick up your prize.
Double
Marathon Challenge Award
In
2007, skiers have the opportunity to challenge themselves
by completing two marathons in one weekend: the Rangeley
Lakes Loppet (freestyle 50 km) on March 3, and the Great
Glen to Bretton Woods Nordic Adventure (classic 50 km)
on March 4. Those skiers completing both marathons will
be presented with a special award at the Nordic Adventure
prize ceremony. Skiers wishing to take on the Double Marathon
Challenge must pre-register for each additional event. Do
the Double!
Clothing
ID tags for skiers’ personal bags will be issued.
Tagged bags will be transported from the start to the finish line areas
(25 and 50 km). Relay skiers will have the chance to put personal bags
on the shuttle headed to their finishing point. Race officials are
not responsible for lost or stolen property.
Parking
Participants and spectators are encouraged to park at either
Great Glen or Bretton Woods, and utilize the shuttle bus service (see
below). Very little parking is available elsewhere along the course.
A White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) parking pass is required for
parking on WMNF lands. Shuttle
Bus Service
Shuttle bus service for registered participants will be
provided to the start at Great Glen from pickup points in Bretton Woods,
Twin Mountain, and Gorham, beginning at 6:00 a.m. Shuttle bus service
from the 25 km finish will be provided to Bretton Woods and to Great
Glen. Please indicate on your entry if you intend to use the shuttle
service. Bus schedules will be posted on the event website.
Volunteers
Friends or family members interested in being volunteer workers
at the event are encouraged to contact Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center.
Please ask for Sue Wemyss.
Preparing
for your Nordic Adventure
Good
preparation is the key to having a positive experience in the Nordic
Adventure. Focus on building endurance and strength to cover your chosen
distance. Endurance is gained through weeks of lower intensity distance
training, exercising at a pace at which you can still talk. Build up
your once-a-week "overdistance" workout so you can ski 2.5
to 3 hours continuously. (Take in liquids and some calories during
these workouts.) Include shorter, (:45 to 1:30) distance workouts the
rest of the week. Strength
gains help you hold your technique together when you're covering long
distance. High repetitions of exercises for
your core, (crunches, situps, backups, sideups, etc.) will help. If
you don't get on snow regularly, make sure to do some tricep strengthening
exercises (dips, exergenie). Consider taking a lesson or two to improve
technique and learn better skiing efficiency. Both Great Glen Trails
and Bretton Woods have well-trained instructors ready to teach you.
What
to carry in the event
The 50 km route includes an extended climb followed by a
long downhill. Bringing an extra vest or wind jacket to don at the
top of Jefferson Notch is a smart idea. If it's cold, an extra dry
hat in your fanny pack might be welcomed. Although the aid stations
will have food, drink and some waxes, bringing a water bottle and energy
bar, a couple spare waxes, cork and scraper is also advised, particularly
for 50 km skiers. |
